What is the difference between a blog and a website?

What is the difference between a blog and a website?”

I get this question a lot.

Worst part is whenever I tell people “have you seen my website,”? The first thing they say is” do you have a website, I thought it’s a blog you said you had “….

.. You can imagine the look on my face whenever I have to engage in such an interesting conversation. I never have the strength to begin the process of explaining.

I always have to do a silent” wphew “!!

If you’re one of those people who have been wondering what the difference between a blog and a website is,
Well… Today’s your lucky day, I’m going to help you out!

So let’s clear the air and reveal the difference already!

First…. all blogs are websites but not all websites are blogs… Did I hear you say “how”??

It’s complicated,I know! just hold on it’s going to make sense in the end.

a website is the mother term given to all sites that you browse online including the blogs.

It’s kinda like the saying
All Apples are Fruits, But all Fruits are not apples.

That said
It is important to know that
The difference between a blog and a website is more about form and structure than anything else.

Blogs are informal while websites are more formal, there’s no room for interaction on a website as there is no commenting section.

Blogs have posts on the homepage, but websites have pages on the homepage. Like about us, contact us etc.
Also a website could also have a blog as one of its pages.

While a website’s homepage features static contents that rarely change, a blog is constantly taking a new look as new posts replace old ones on the homepage.

Blogs are generally more informally presented to the visitors. The language used is often much simpler than on websites.

So, I hope this helps you.
I tried to keep it as simple as possible.

  1. Great description. I’m not really so concerned that people know if my blog is a blog or a webstite (I call it both), but I do appreciate when my friends and family understand that my site is not just an online journal. It’s something that takes tons of time and work to maintain, and it is a business. It’s a job, that’s for sure!

  2. It is one of my biggest pet peeves when people ask me for updates about my “website”. I know they just don’t know, but it still grates my nerves. Now that I’m responsible for both my blog and a website, I’m hoping to make it easier to explain the differences to others.

  3. I didn’t know this difference which is weird because I am a blogger LOL. Thank you for sharing this with us. Lots of useful info.

  4. I’ve never had someone ask me the difference between a blog and website, but this gave a great explanation of the two. Blogs are a lot more informal and facilitate conversation and interaction!
