Whether it’s the loss of a loved one or a horrible personal experience, it takes a toll on your emotions leaving you devastated, distressed, confused and sometimes depressed.

Most people who have gone through traumatic experiences have a hard time recovering from it and getting their lives back. No matter how bad your experience may have been, all hope is not lost, there are steps you can take to recover your emotional equilibrium and regain control of your life. Here are some tips on how you can get past a traumatic experience.

5 ways to get past a traumatic experience

Talk to a counselor: When dealing with a traumatic experience, depression, or anxiety, it’s always advisable to seek the help of a professional – it could be a counselor or a therapist. These mental health professionals are equipped with the skills and knowledge to help you find ways to get past your traumatic experiences and also teach you how to cope with it, if need be.

If you are wondering about how you can easily get in touch with a professional counselor or therapist, This isn’t so hard or complicated, there are tons of amazing websites online where you can request an appointment with a therapist.

One of my favorite websites and companies for counseling sessions is Ray of Hope Counseling Services. Ray of Hope Counseling Services is a group of counselors and psychotherapists that offers counseling sessions for individuals, families couples, and groups. They have specialists who are skilled in stress and anger management, therapy for abuse and violence,  addiction therapy, and more, just to mention a few.

Their services are great because it is provided within a safe and confidential environment, so you have nothing to worry about. I particularly love and recommend Ray of Hope Counseling Services because they are committed to providing support and comfort for their clients. Booking sessions on their website is quite easy and straightforward because their website is very user-friendly.

She is a trained mental health professional, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Psychology. Lynn strives to meet clients where they are. She helps the client navigate through their past to help with a better understanding toward how to achieve goals for a happier healthier life.

Eat healthy: it’s amazing how effective a healthy diet can be when it comes to helping you recover from a negative experience, this is because some foods improve the state of your mental health, some of these foods include fresh fruits, vegetables, protein-rich legumes, fatty fish and Omega 3 fatty acids. Eating right is a great way to improve your mental health. A healthy diet improves sanity and eradicates depression and anxiety.

Give yourself time: every form of recovery takes time, and this is no different when it come to recovering from traumatic experiences, accept that it would definitely take a while before things get back to normal, accept that recovery happens gradually and with this consciousness it would be easier to get past it. Don’t stay in denial all through the time, accept what has happened and know that the feeling will not last forever. With time it will fade and you will be able to get on with your life.

Stay active: one of the best ways to speed up recovery from a bad experience, whether it’s a heartbreak or a physical assault, is to spend your time doing nice things, do things that you love. There are so many fun activities that make you happy, don’t hesitate to get involved in these activities, they sure would go a long way in helping you get your life back on track. Take a vacation, go for walks, spend time with friends and family, if you love sports you could get involved in some sporting activities like swimming, running etc. Whatever your preferences are just ensure that you stay active daily, this will help you stay positive.

Surround yourself with friends and family: having the right people around you when dealing with the trauma of an event is very important. Try not to shut out your loved ones, share your feelings with them and allow them help you heal. Spend time together with your family and friends, hang out together, listen to their jokes, have them listen to you, give them the opportunity to talk you through the bitter experience, this  helps you cope with the negative experience and speed up recovery.
