5 Types of mental health therapy you can use in 2023

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is one of the more recent mental health therapies that is fast becoming increasingly popular. This therapy is also called talk therapy. This is because, in this type of therapy, the patient books a session with a licensed mental health doctor or licensed mental health care professional. Just like the name implies you get to talk to professionals, who in turn see how to help you. Given the high success rate of therapy, it is often used either alone or with medications to treat mental disorders.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

One of the most common and most popular types of mental health therapy is CBT. This type of therapy focuses on helping people identify and change negative patterns of thought and behavior. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that aims to help people change negative patterns of thinking and behaviour. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected and that by changing negative patterns of thinking, we can change our feelings and behaviours. CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy that focuses on the present and helps people develop coping skills to deal with their problems. It is often used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

This type of therapy is often used to help people with borderline personality disorder, but it can also be helpful for those with other mental health conditions. It focuses on helping people develop healthy coping mechanisms and improve their relationships with others.

Psychoanalytic therapy

This type of therapy involves exploring a person’s unconscious thoughts and feelings in order to better understand their behavior and emotional struggles. Psychoanalytic therapy is a form of mental health treatment that was developed by Sigmund Freud and his followers. It is based on the idea that unconscious thoughts, feelings, and conflicts can influence a person’s behaviour and mental health. In psychoanalytic therapy, the therapist helps the patient to explore and understand these unconscious thoughts and feelings and how they might be affecting their life. This process is known as “psychoanalysis.”

The goal of psychoanalytic therapy is to help the patient gain insight into their unconscious thoughts and feelings and to learn how to better manage their emotions and behaviour. This can be done through techniques such as free association, where the patient says whatever comes to mind without censoring their thoughts, comes to mind without censoring their thoughts, and dream analysis, where the patient discusses the meanings and symbols in their dreams.

Psychoanalytic therapy can be a long-term process, with sessions typically lasting 50 minutes to an hour and occurring once or twice a week. It is often used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and personality disorders.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

This type of therapy focuses on helping people improve their relationships and communication with others. Interpersonal therapy (IPT) is a type of short-term psychotherapy that focuses on the individual’s relationships with other people and how they interact with others. It is based on the idea that a person’s relationships with others can have a significant impact on their mental health and that by addressing these relationships, a person can improve their symptoms and overall well-being.

IPT typically involves 12 to 16 weekly sessions, each lasting 45 to 50 minutes. During these sessions, the therapist helps the patient to identify and understand their relationship patterns and how they may be contributing to their mental health symptoms. The therapist may also help the patient to develop new communication skills and coping strategies to improve their relationships with others.

IPT is often used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. It may also be used to help individuals cope with life transitions or adjustments to major life events.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

This type of therapy is often used to treat trauma and can be helpful for people who have experienced a traumatic event or who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Conclusion

It’s important to note that different types of therapy may be more or less effective for different people, and it may take some trial and error to find the right fit. It’s also important to work with a licensed mental health professional who can help you choose the best treatment approach for your needs.
