Did you jump into the new year full of vigor and enthusiasm ?
With a resolution to be on your best behaviour and a plan to get started on your self-improvement journey?
Great.
That’s the way to go!
2022 is going to be your oyster, and you’re going to smash it.
In your journey you’re going to meet a couple of roadblocks every now and then,
Issues rising from fear, lack of motivation and just plain laziness will arise.
And then there’s discouragement from people, naysayers and detractors!
For instance, there are people who say that the personal development industry is a scam and the proponents of this school of thought are a bunch of smooth talkers, who do not practice what they preach.
However, you must commit to staying focused because if you are ever going to make anything out of your life, and if you are going to reach your mark, then you need to take personal development seriously.
It took me years to fully comprehend and come to terms with the whole concept of personal development, but the moment I got a hang of it, everything began to fall into place.
Do you spend most of your time on social media scrolling mindlessly through your timeline until your thumb begins to hurt? It’s time to develop yourself, by devoting some time every day to reading, and learning new things.
No matter where you are at work, in school, in your health or business you can be better.
Interestingly, personal development is also biblical, as a matter of fact, one of the best books you’ll ever read on personal development, is the book of proverbs.
Now that we have that out of the way, here are a few tips on how to get started on your self-improvement journey.
Do you have a clear mental picture of what you would like your future to be like? If you don’t, you need to start by creating a personal vision for your life. This is the first step to take. Once you can envision where you would like to be in your personal and professional life, then you can start setting goals and making plans on how to get there.
Now that you have a mental picture of what you want to become, write it down clearly. Write down what it would cost you to get there, this should include the goals, strategies and tools you’ll need to get there. You can also outline your strengths and weaknesses, your skills and latent abilities and also identify areas that need to be worked.
This is the part where you start taking daily steps that will take you closer to your vision. More often than not, this would require you to read books, take courses, attend seminars, and get a mentor, among other activities that would help you improve yourself. If you’re a detail oriented person—someone who values precision and getting things right—you may already be familiar with the drive for improvement that often comes with this mindset. This trait can be a real asset on your journey, helping you stay focused and committed.
This remains one of the most important aspects of personal development, you must be able to execute. A plan without a strategy is a mere wish. You must be able to act on your plans, take action.
Trust me, you cannot do it alone. Join a community, a group of like minds. People who are going in the same direction as you. People who are also passionate about becoming the best versions of themselves.
